What is prebiotic fiber?

Prebiotic fiber is fiber your own body cannot digest but some of your gut bacteria can. They ferment it for energy. Short-chain FOS is one of the best-studied prebiotics.

Is Fiber Boost a probiotic?

No. A probiotic contains live bacteria. Fiber Boost contains no bacteria; it is food for the bacteria you already have. Many people take a prebiotic and a probiotic together.

How much should I take?

One scoop (5.4 g) a day, which gives 5 g of fiber. In a placebo-controlled study, healthy adults took 2.5 to 10 g of short-chain FOS a day and tolerated it well.

Will it cause gas?

Some mild gas in the first days is common with any fermentable fiber. Start with one scoop, take it at the same time each day and drink enough water.

Is it low-FODMAP?

No. FOS is a fructan, which is a FODMAP. If you follow a low-FODMAP diet, check with your doctor or dietitian first.

Does it raise blood sugar?

The label shows 0 g sugar. In a small randomized crossover study, 10 g of FOSSENCE on its own did not raise blood sugar or insulin in healthy adults.

Can I put it in coffee?

Yes. It is unflavored and dissolves in hot and cold drinks, including coffee, water, juice and smoothies.

Is it for you?

A good fit if

  • You want an unflavored fiber you can stir into coffee or water
  • You prefer a short ingredient list
  • You want a daily prebiotic, not a probiotic

Ask your doctor first if

  • You follow a low-FODMAP diet
  • You are pregnant, nursing or take medication
  • You have a digestive condition under a doctor’s care
